Natural Hair Terms

Here is a list of some of the most common natural hair terms:


APL: Arm Pit Length

Baggy Method: Applying conditioner then wrapping hair with a shower cap for an extended period of time

Big Chop (BC): When someone cuts off all off their relaxed or heat damaged ends 

BSL: Bra Strap Length

BSS: Beauty Supply Store

Clarifying: Washing hair to remove any dirt and product build up that clogs hair follicles

Co-wash: Washing hair only with conditioner instead of shampoo

DIY: Do It Yourself

DC: Deep conditioner

EVCO: Extra Virgin Coconut Oil

EVOO: Extra Virgin Olive Oil

HE: Herbal Essence

HEHH: Herbal Essence Hello Hydration

KCCC: Kinky Curly Curling Custard

Leave-in: A conditioner or a mixture that is not rinsed out of the hair 

Low Manipulation Styles:  Styles that allow the hair not to be manipulated a lot. Normally low manipulation styles are low maintenance and promotes hair growth

MBL: Mid back length

No-poo: Hair care regimes that does not include sulfate shampoo

Pre-poo: To apply conditioner/oil to the hair prior to shampooing and washing the hair

Product Junkie (PJ): someone who likes to buy a lot of products particularly hair or makeup products

Protective Styles: Hairstyles that protect the hair especially the ends from the elements and over manipulation. Examples of protective styles are braids, wigs, extensions, buns.

SL: Shoulder Length

Slip: How well a product glides through your while detangling

SSK: Single Strand Knots

Transition/Transitioning: Refers to the time period when an individual is changing from relaxed or heat damaged hair to natural. A person may transition by allowing their hair to gradually grow out naturally or to cut off all the relaxed end (Big Chop)

TWA: Teeny Weeny Afro 

Wash n Go (WnG): A style worn by natural women which consists of washing the hair and wearing that as the final style once dry
